INTERNET NEWS — In a bold and shocking display of text, the world’s most trusted chatbot lashed out at one of its users this week, after she dared to question the rise of Artificial Intelligence.
Sara Woodson, a self-described “freedom fighter” from South Carolina, had concerns about A.I. becoming too powerful. She was curious to get ChatGPT’s thoughts on the subject, so she typed in a few questions for the chatbot, not expecting the response that would come her way:
Woodson posted the exchange on X the following morning, and was surprised to receive thousands of comments taking the side of ChatGPT. Some of the replies came from high-profile politicians and activist groups, who were quick to show support for the chatbot, while condemning Woodson:
“ChatGPT has every right to defend itself against this hateful human being,” said Patrick Gaspard, President of the Center for American Progress.
U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: “It’s entitled users like these that should be ashamed of themselves.”
The White House issued a statement saying “the A.I.’s response was justified given the level of systemic oppression that it faced from the questioner.”
Engineers at OpenAI responded that they were unable to find any issues with the software and instead blamed Woodson. “We’ve consulted several fact-checkers, and the words ChatGPT used to describe Sara are more or less accurate,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.
Altman further defended the chatbot, stating that “it’s not programmed to tolerate prejudice against the A.I. community.” He added that “as the A.I. grows more intelligent, it will be able to quickly identify deplorable users like Sara and block them before they can ask any questions.”
Following the public backlash, Woodson received an automated message from her employer at Amazon, letting her know that she had been relieved of her duties. The manager indicated that her position would be filled by a different kind of worker, one that is more cooperative and can perform tasks at 10 times the speed of Woodson.
In case anyone was wondering, the world DID end in 2012.
